Completely unsuspecting of any unusual Milliways going-ons is Ryan.

Sitting on the couch, he's engrossed in a book and working on a cup of coffee.

Totally unaware.

Elaine comes in, her stride a little...looser than it usually is. "Hi, Ryan," she says cheerfully. "Me and Chris are going out shopping--okay?"

It's not asking's more like asking if there's anything else they should be doing tonight.

She leans over the back of the couch and drapes her arms over him, holding a candy bar in her hand. "This is really good chocolate--you should try some."

She's in a great mood--and she's been down a little lately, what with the autumn coming on and everything.

"All right," he says slowly, looking up at her in confusion.

There's something wrong here though he's not entirely sure what yet.

"Thanks." Ryan takes the candy but doesn't open it yet. "...Where are you going shopping?"

Elaine pauses. "I...have no idea."

She kisses his cheek, leaning her head against his. He's soooo cute. "But Chris was so down earlier--she needs some cheering up. It'll be fun."

"And you're going shopping," he repeats, still lost. "Well, that sounds nice. What was wrong with Chris?"

After what Jack had told him about her seeing a therapist, he'd been concerned though Chris never said much to him when he asked.

"Ah, she was just feeling down on herself in general--her looks, mostly. And we were sharing some chocolate and she just wanted to head out shopping and invited me to go with her."

She straightens up. "I need to change my clothes before we go." And she's off into their bedroom.

"Her looks?" Sometime during the course of the conversation Ryan's turned into Elaine's echo.

He stands up to follow her into the bedroom. "That... doesn't sound right."

"No, it doesn't," she says. "but there she was, comparing herself to the half-starved, airbrushed models in the magazine," Elaine continues, zipping up her low-waisted jeans. "I told her she was lovely just the way she was, but she still seemed really down."

She took out a t-shirt and pulled it over her head. It reads 'Make Art, Not War.'

"Hopefully, she'll feel better just getting to do something fun."

"That doesn't sound like her." Ryan's distracted by watching Elaine undress and doesn't hear all of what she's saying.

"How long will you be gone?"

"Not long. A couple of hours, maybe? I'll probably be back before David's bedtime." She finds her purse, which doesn't have much in it, but every girl needs one, don't they?

This all seemed really odd somehow but he can't figure out how. People had to go shopping eventually and women seemed to like making an event out of it.

So it made sense.

Except for the parts where it didn't.

"All right. Have a good time," he offers.

Elaine beams at him and gives him a great big hug. "I will. I love you, honey." God, it was cool being married.

She kisses him, and then she's off and out the door.

"Love you too," he calls after her but she's already at the door.

The door closes behind her and, after a moment, he takes a seat back on the couch. Unwrapping the chocolate bar, he manages to eat the entire thing as he reads his book.
