It's a slow Sunday afternoon, the kind Ryan thinks he might spend watching football if he were alive.

But he's not and David's starting to get stir crazy from being cooped up inside all this time. After a brief stop at the bar, where Ryan soon tired of fielding questions about all the puppets and how would puppets eat because David didn't accept the answer "That's Milliways", he decides it's warm enough to try ice-skating.

Borrowing skates from the bar, the two head outside.

It's been a while since Ryan's gone ice skating, though he gets into the swing of it easily enough. His first movements are wobbly (which David finds hilarious) but at least he's not skating on his ankles. David, on the other hand, takes to skating easily though he's a little wary at first of going very fast.

After a while of this, Ryan offers to go inside to get some hot drinks. When he returns, David has found a stick and a rock and is playing some rudimentary version of hockey.

"Loosen up your knees," Ryan calls, watching the boy chase after the rock.

He couldn't be more more proud of David.

Elaine has come outside with him as he returns, and smiles. "Oh, he seems to be quite good," she says.

"You have taught him very well."

Ryan takes a sip of his coffee and smiles. "Yeah, he is. Though he took to batting the rock around without any prompting. Maybe we could get him some hockey equipment."

He had waited, wanting to see how David like skating and if he had any interest in hockey instead of pushing it on him.

"It might be a nice idea," she says. "I just wish he had some other children to play with." She leans her head on his arm.

"He does seem quite content with us, though."

"Me too," he says with a sigh, watching David move more confidently as he chases the rock.

He doesn't say anything to the second comment, not sure if that's the truth. No matter how much time he spent here, he'd still want to go home one day and they still didn't know what would happen when he did.

"So how are you?" he asks, turning to look at her.

Elaine has been thinking of that day too, and trying to come to terms with it, much as she thinks it'll be sooner rather than later.

"I've been well. The waitstaff seem to be working out," she says, a touch of pride in her voice. She's really tried to make herself available to the staff if they need her, and she's been in the bar a lot in the later evenings.

"It is good to know things will be taken care of when I'm not there. So, when did you two decide to try this?"

He can hear the pride in her voice and smiling, he kisses her cheek. "I'm glad to hear that. I know you've been working hard."

While it was still a little difficult to get used to not working, moreover to be the one to stay at home and take care of David while Elaine worked, he was happy for her. He knew how much this meant to her.

"I tried to get my kids into it but... none of them ever really took to it."
Ryan gives a half-shrug, glancing out at the ice. "It's a fun sport though. When I was a kid I always wished I had more of a chance to play it."

The occasional game of street hockey was as close as he ever came.

"I'm glad you and he get along," she says.

It really makes her happier than he'll know. Their little family might be strange, but it's something she wouldn't give up for anything.

If she doesn't have to.

David is doing really well with that rock. "It seems he is taking to the game as well. Perhaps it's you rubbing off on him."

He's caught off-guard at that first comment, though he knows Elaine meant nothing by it. "There was never much chance of us not."

Yes, he was surprised when he returned to Milliways and found that she had taken David in. It wasn't something he was prepared for and raising another child wasn't in his plans after his children were grown.

But things happen, plans be damned. He wasn't going to make Elaine choose, even if he didn't take into account how much she wanted a child, that would be cruel. And he wasn't going to leave her.

That left him with only a few choices but only one real option.

She smiles up at him and puts her arm around his waist as she leans on him.

It's taken Elaine a long time to realize that life isn't a straight line--that things happen, that you go with things you never thought would happen to you, that what will really make you happy might be something you'd never expect.

And she watches David play for a while. There's no question that she loves him, though he's never said it back to her. She's never expected David to love her, though.

In the end, she's not his mother.

But she worries and fusses and sometimes she lies awake at night worrying about what will become of him.

"Do you think he will be all right?" she asks, softly.

"I don't know," he admits, wishing he could give her a more reassuring answer. It's something he wondered a lot and the possibilities worried him. "I hope so but..." Ryan's voice trails off as he sighs.

"I'm not sure where he'll go. I don't know if his Mom would take him in. I imagine they have some sort of adoption agency there but I don't know how he'll explain what happened or the past. I just don't know."

Elaine bit her lip and nodded, feeling uncertain.

"I just wish I knew more about his world--so at least we could prepare him in some way. But then, things have a way of going awry around here."

She laughs, a little sadly, and watches him, his cheeks ruddy with cold. He looks happy, and she's very glad.

"He's further in the future, there'd be some kind of adoption agency I'm sure. Foster parents. But there's a lot of problems with that." All the usual ones and some unique to David.

"Yes," she says softly. There's no need to elaborate, really. Elaine's gone over and over it in her mind, and she cannot see a way around what he would need to do.

She turns to put her arms around Ryan, and she leans her head against his chest.

She worries more than she'd like to admit.

Not far behind Ryan, Jack comes out, skates slung over one shoulder, hockey stick in the other. He's wearing the L.A. Kings jersey Tony and Michelle got him for the first birthday he'd spent in Milliways, the one with his last name and the number 24 on the back.

Taking a seat on a rock near the shore, he takes off his boots and starts strapping on his skates, moving a little awkwardly as he's wearing a couple layers under his nylon pants.

Spotting Ryan and David already out on the ice, he waves to them.

It takes a second for Ryan to see him, only noticing something moving out of the corner of his eye.

But once he sees Jack, he smiles and goes over to where he is, careful not to spill his coffee. "Hey. Nice Jersey."

Though the Kings sucked, but still.

"Thanks. Birthday gift, year before last. Teaching David to skate?" Jack says, getting to his feet and pulling the skate guards off his blades.

"Yeah, he took to it quickly," Ryan says, watching as David wobbles on the ice but soon regains his footing.

"I planned to just working on the skating part today but David had other ideas." And Ryan didn't even have to encourage him! He wasn't sure how long this interest in hockey would last but he's hoping long enough so they could play a game or two.

Jack gets onto the ice, wobbling a little as he takes a couple tentative glides. It's been a while since he's been on skates.

"He seems to be a natural. Too bad they don't have a hockey league here, though it's probably best he doesn't learn the more violent aspects of the game."

Date: 2007-02-05 06:28 am (UTC)

Ryan gives a short laugh at this. "How else will he learn that blood bounces off of ice?"

"He's a boy. He'll figure it out somehow, I'm sure. Besides, it's not like there are boards here that you can bodycheck someone into."

"There's still accidentally elbowing someone in the face." Maybe it's a good thing Ryan was never able to play much hockey as a kid.

Or as an adult.

"Or accidentally hitting them in the head with your stick. But I doubt you'd want David to learn that one."

From: [identity profile]
"I don't think Elaine would appreciate that, no."

Looking around at the few people out and about, he adds in a more serious tone, "It'd be nice if there were more kids David's age here."

David had him, Elaine, Chris and a bunch of other people but they were all adults and Ryan could remember enough about being a kid to know that wasn't enough.

"Yeah, he needs kids his own age; learning to socialize by being around adults just isn't the same," Jack says, shifting his feet on the ice to get the feel of his skates, but staying close to Ryan, his voice low.

Soemthing he's worried about when it comes time for David to go back to his own world.

"He didn't have any... brothers or sisters back home and I don't think he's used to being around a lot kids. This isn't too much of a change for him... but still."
