OOM: The Wake

There were some things he never wanted to do and some things he never imagined himself doing.

Like preparing the body of a friend for a wake.

Elaine had decided that Tony's corpse needed to be prepared, his wounds dressed and that tarp removed. It might be more difficult to explain the shroud he was wrapped in now, the gauzy white cloth that covered his body, with just one thin layer over his face like a veil. This shroud raise more questions than just leaving him in the tarp, a fact that bothered Ryan, but that option didn't seem ... decent. It was distasteful on a visceral level, offending something that went beyond logic.

Visit the sick. Harbor the harborless. Ransom the captive. Bury the dead.

That didn't make this much easier though. It was out of respect, duty and even pride that he was here. He couldn't leave Elaine to do this alone, that was never an option. Still, it was hard to look at the ashen skin and the wounds and not be horrified, not wonder about what his own body had looked like. One bullet wound but the entry point was different and Ryan was grateful for that. The neat, small entry wound in Tony's forehead was easy to cover with bandages, still leaving his face visible. Intact. Lying over the body, on his chest, was a small bouquet of white lilies.

The only problem after the wake would be the burial. Something would have to be done soon. He knew the others were waiting to see if Michelle would arrive here or what the chatter on the mission...

But it couldn't wait any longer. They'd have to take care of the body and he had to be done soon. It didn't matter what condition the body was in, it just wasn't right to wait. It seemed disrespectful somehow. Not to mention the unspoken hope that he knew was shared by the others that if Tony was buried maybe he could come back to Milliways. It was insane and sounded almost like Milliways' own version of superstition but it also made a strange sort of sense. Tony would come back here if he could so what else could be keeping him but this?

The still sparsely decorated room has more furniture in it now. Along with the bed that the body lay on - a single, covered with a white sheet and pushed horizontal against the wall opposite the door - there were also a few folding chairs in case anyone needed to sit during the blessing.

Across the hall, in Room 515, there was none of the usual bedroom furniture, just chairs, tables and two couches. On one table there was food, plates and napkins. On the other table (and in the two coolers underneath) there are soft drinks, coffee, tea and a wide variety of liquors.

Ryan walks over to the doorway where Elaine is standing and waits for people to come by.

Behrooz is leaning against a wall, holding a plastic cup of water.

He doesn't seem very inclined to meet anyone's eyes, mostly keeping them to the floor, though they flicker up occasionally as people walk in, or talk quietly. He tries to block out anything he can hear.

Chloe pulls her close. For Angela, she'll hug tight.

"I came in a few days ago." Why not call it home, nearly everyone she's ever cared about is here. It would be easy to say.

"Everyone's okay, your dad, your mom, Jack." Yes, Tony's dead, but Chase, Kim and Jack need to be okay. For Angela.

Couldn't lose them. Wouldn't lose them.

She lets go.

Behrooz takes a sip of the wter he's holding.

He tosses a glance toward Angela. It's brief - she hasn't exactly been that talkative, so he's not sure about actually saying anything - but it's there.

"I know. They're here somewhere. In the bar, at least. I'm just glad you're here too."

She wants her family around her right now. "I still can't believe he's gone," Angela whispers.

Angela looks over and gives him a small smile. "Hey, Behrooz. Thank you for coming," she says softly.

"Maybe he'll come back. Here, I mean. Ryan came here, Elaine came here." Chloe puts her arm around Angela's shoulders and stands to her left, looking around for any sign of Jack, Chase or Kim.

Angela nods. "Yeah, he could. I wish Michelle were here," she says faintly, a little worried.

Behrooz nods, and doesn't smile.

"Knew him... in here," he murmurs simply.

"Excuse me, Father," Ryan says, interuppting their conversation.

Leaning over he whispers to Elaine about the eathquake damage to the bar kitchen and asks what they should do for food.

Elaine murmurs that she'll handle it and excusing herself from the conversation, leaves the room.

"Sorry about that. The bar kitchen is closed after the earthquake and since Elaine is in charge of the food, I thought she needed to know," he says apologetically, having a feeling he interrupted an important conversation.

"It's nice to see you again, Father."

Kim walks in, she thinks she knows what to expect but she can't help a soft gasp when she sees Tony's face through the veil.

'It's never going to be the same.'

"Ah...I'm Samantha Largeman. My husband knew him first..then me." Sam smiles.

Angela comes over to her mother silently and stands close enough to lean her head on her shoulder.

"I'm sure she'll come, when she's ready." Chloe looks around. "Maybe she's here, or coming soon. I mean, I can only imagine she would want to be here."

"Yeah? It seems that people really didn't know each other before coming here, I guess."

Which is obvious, of course, but she's still not really thinking straight.

Kim holds Angie's hand and looks down respectfully.

God's will. How could this be God's will?

She knows the prayer and mouths it along with the Priest. She's not Catholic, but she's heard the words enough.

'They were supposed to be happy. This was never supposed to happen.'

Kim slips her arm around her back, blinking away tears.

There's no words. He looks normal, except for that he'll...it's his body but he's not there.

Chase is sticking close to Angie, staring intently at the opposite wall.

He nods a goodbye to Elaine, and a greeting to Ryan, and there's a moment's silence at the word earthquake, but he says, "Hello, Ryan. It's quite all right." A pause. "Though, if you don't mind-- I had just asked Elaine if she would mind telling me a little about Tony."

Kim notices her enter. She's not sure she's ever seen Chloe this way.

Chloe was the only reason why they weren't having this wake for more people.

She looks up in greeting.

David can hear the words of the prayer as he nears the room. Not wanting to interrupt, he stands outside the doorway, saying the familiar words with the rest of the mourners.

It was difficult not to hear those words and think of another time he had met some of the same people in this room today, when they gathered outside for Tony and Michelle's wedding.

He had always believed in God's goodness but sometimes he didn't understand His will.

"...Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil..."

David steps into the room across the hall and finds the person he wanted to speak too.

"Jack, hello."

Jack jumps a little as he hears a familiar voice over his shoulder. He looks up, spotting Palmer. "Sir. I didn't know you were in the bar," he says, wishing his voice didn't sound as rough as it actually does.

It upsets him to see her unhappy, but it doesn't hurt that she's grieving for Tony. They all are.

Kim doesn't want to eat or drink. But she can't stay in that room any longer.

She sits on the couch and glances back at the other room.
