OOM: The Wake

There were some things he never wanted to do and some things he never imagined himself doing.

Like preparing the body of a friend for a wake.

Elaine had decided that Tony's corpse needed to be prepared, his wounds dressed and that tarp removed. It might be more difficult to explain the shroud he was wrapped in now, the gauzy white cloth that covered his body, with just one thin layer over his face like a veil. This shroud raise more questions than just leaving him in the tarp, a fact that bothered Ryan, but that option didn't seem ... decent. It was distasteful on a visceral level, offending something that went beyond logic.

Visit the sick. Harbor the harborless. Ransom the captive. Bury the dead.

That didn't make this much easier though. It was out of respect, duty and even pride that he was here. He couldn't leave Elaine to do this alone, that was never an option. Still, it was hard to look at the ashen skin and the wounds and not be horrified, not wonder about what his own body had looked like. One bullet wound but the entry point was different and Ryan was grateful for that. The neat, small entry wound in Tony's forehead was easy to cover with bandages, still leaving his face visible. Intact. Lying over the body, on his chest, was a small bouquet of white lilies.

The only problem after the wake would be the burial. Something would have to be done soon. He knew the others were waiting to see if Michelle would arrive here or what the chatter on the mission...

But it couldn't wait any longer. They'd have to take care of the body and he had to be done soon. It didn't matter what condition the body was in, it just wasn't right to wait. It seemed disrespectful somehow. Not to mention the unspoken hope that he knew was shared by the others that if Tony was buried maybe he could come back to Milliways. It was insane and sounded almost like Milliways' own version of superstition but it also made a strange sort of sense. Tony would come back here if he could so what else could be keeping him but this?

The still sparsely decorated room has more furniture in it now. Along with the bed that the body lay on - a single, covered with a white sheet and pushed horizontal against the wall opposite the door - there were also a few folding chairs in case anyone needed to sit during the blessing.

Across the hall, in Room 515, there was none of the usual bedroom furniture, just chairs, tables and two couches. On one table there was food, plates and napkins. On the other table (and in the two coolers underneath) there are soft drinks, coffee, tea and a wide variety of liquors.

Ryan walks over to the doorway where Elaine is standing and waits for people to come by.

The room is quiet, any conversation a hushed murmur. Elaine and Ryan are still standing by the doorway to greet people.

There are plenty of chairs available for those who wish to sit during the blessing.

Across the hall, there's food and drink for those who want it and plenty of room to sit and talk.

Gil and Sara enter the room together.

She is no longer crying, but her face is as blank as a mask.

Grief and concern can be seen in Gil's eyes, though the concern is more for Sara than anything else.

Mal walks through the door by himself, fingertips worrying idly at the inside cuffs of his dark jacket.

Wakes make Mal twitchy.

Doesn't mean he's not here.

Jack's one of the first to arrive, of course, a distant look in his eyes as he walks in, still limping. The fact that Tony's been prepared for the wake slowly makes its way into his brain, just reinforcing the fact that this is actually happening.

Mal hasn't seen Jack since...well, since. He doesn't wave to the man, but just nods.

Jack can notice Mal, or not. But Mal's keeping an eye on him.

Only thing he can do, really.

Jack senses someone watching him, tensing for a moment until he sees Mal. He nods back, letting out a long breath and trying to relax a little.

He can get through this; he has to.

Sam's here.

Arms crossed over her expansive belly, and sniffling 'cause she walked in and almost burst into tears again.

But she's here.

Jack makes his way across the hall fairly quickly after the blessing; he'd had a hard time sitting through it, and he needs to get away from the sight of his best friend wrapped in a shroud.

Though he may not be able to make it very long in here, either.

Mal'd made a similarly quick exit, shortly after Jack.

( -- Make sure my eyes is closed, will ya?)

"Wèi, Jack," Mal offers, stepping next to him and causing a metallic faint clink in his right pocket.

Jack doesn't hear Mal at first, then jerks to attention. "Hey, Mal," he says, his voice still hoarse. He'd say something in addition, but the little he can think of just sounds trite or inappropriate; small talk is beyond his grasp at the moment.

It is very, very seldom that anyone sees the Aes Sedai clad other than in blue.

Blue, however, is not the color of mourning.

White is.

When Moiraine glides near-silently down the hallway to room 513, the silk gown she wears is the shade of mountain snow.

Don't have to talk. Not specifically, and not with words.

Mal digs out the source of the clinking - his battered flask. He holds it out to Jack.

"Before you ask, yes - it is the swill that I normally get into."

At some point, a priest slips in, wearing a cross and a purple stole along with a black collared shirt and green Army trousers. He stands quietly to one side.

Sharpe's been to too many funerals to like them, not that anybody does. And anyway, he didn't really know Tony.

Respected him, though, for what he tried to do in China, and liked him well enough.

So he slips in quietly, to stay unobtrusively at the back. He hopes.

She stays away from the alcohol and goes straight for the tea, her hands shaking as she takes a sip.

She won't last long here, she'll leave soon enough.

Right now, Jack doesn't really care. Alcohol of any kind sounds like a good idea, as the numbness is starting to lose its edge. He takes a drink, wincing at the taste, but not as much as he would have. "Thanks."

Jack spots Sharpe as he makes his way to a chair, and nods. He hasn't seen Sharpe since the rescue--didn't even see him then, really--and knows they should talk sometime soon. He should have sought Sharpe out earlier, he'd just been...distracted.

Chloe clutches her sleeve as she enters, pulling at it absent-mindly.

She'll make her way to the corner in the back as soon as she can and as silently as she can.

Last thing she needs is people staring at her.

Father Mulcahy stands still, his head bowed. Then he moves, making a tiny sign of the cross. He opens the small container of holy water and dips his fingers in, sprinkling several droplets over the shroud-wrapped body, and then he looks up, at all of the somber faces.

"Into your hands, O Lord, we humble entrust our brother Tony. In this life you embraced him with your tender love; deliver him now from every evil and bid him enter eternal rest.

"The old order has passed away: welcome him then into paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping nor pain, but the fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen."

He pauses, then says quietly, "I would ask that those who know it would join me in a prayer.

"Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven..."

Those familiar words make this more real, more final than it was before. Ryan's seen the place beyond the door, the one without sorrow or pain. He knew that if Tony never came back here, he deserved to go there.

Slipping his hand into Elaine's, he recites the prayer along with the others. "...Give us this day our daily bread..."

Jack hasn't darkened the door of a church in years; not since Teri's coffin was carried out the front doors of the church where they'd held her funeral service. Not that he'd been much of a churchgoer before that. Though he'd been raised Lutheran, church was more of a chore, something he did because his father made him; who, in turn, only went because it was just something you did.

But the prayer is still familiar, coming back to him easily, though he's finding it difficult not to choke on the words.

"...And forgive us our trespasses..."
